PROXY (1.0)

Unreal Engine Application, Custom-Built HID Controller, and physical installation

2018-2019

A combination of both physical interaction and video game play, PROXY (1.0) is an ARG transmedia experience that has players assume the role of a new hire taking over the role of Erik March- an employee at the Fractured Haze Realities Company who goes against company protocols by illegally creating and uploading a PROXY of himself (named Ulrich Dex Hexen) to the system as a statement of rebellion against what the company stands for.

This project was created in collaboration with Milena Satrohan under the group moniker Hex.Hack Games.

Involvement: Game development utilizing Unreal Engine, user interface design, scripting using C++, asset creation and graphic design, electronics using Teensy and Arduino software, CAD design and fabrication of custom controller, physical "desk" installation and wall backboard creation and set-dressing, and marketing.

The Experience

The full installation is an office space “cubicle”, where the user can explore Erik’s workspace and learn about his current developments on the System. The user fends off “attacks” from the rogue Proxy using the “Fractured Haze Employee Interface Device” to minimize data loss and progress through the story. ...Do you have what it takes to save the System?

This project essentially required the creation of an entire operating system within Unreal Engine, with a login system, file browser, and media player. Musical works made by colleagues were also featured as part of this project, allowing an opportunity for others to showcase their own works within ours!

Puzzle Demo

Using a custom plugboard controller with attached quarter-inch TRS cables, the player is presented to complete a challenge. The blue ports are the "goal pattern". If a cable is inserted into the correct jack on the physical controller on the desk in front of them, it will light up green. If a cable is in the wrong jack, it will light up red. The goal for number of 'stages' to complete for each minigame iteration increses as the story progresses.
